#1 Learn to sail in a weekend! No experience is required, and new sailors begin with the Basic Sailing class. In one weekend, you'll learn the fundamentals and gain enough on-the-water experience to confidently day sail 20-23' sailboats on your own.
The Basic Sailing class gets you started, teaches you fundamentals and exposes you to the practical experience needed start sailing and gain confidence.
#2 Refine Skills: You know the basics, you’ve practiced sailing with friends and family, and now you must learn to challenge and apply those skills in varied situations. You're ready for the next step - the "Coastal Cruising" class.
In Coastal Cruising, you’ll first refine your command of the fundamentals. For example, you'll not only learn more advanced sail trim and practice more complex docking - you’ll advance to docking under sail! Second, you’ll learn new "intermediate" skills: anchoring, navigation, weather, etc... that will empower you to sail bigger boats, better, faster and further.
Click here for the Coastal Cruising ASA103 Class. We offer a variety of refinement classes to further accelerate and enhance the learning of these skills. Filter classes below on "Refine" to see what's available.
#2 Advance Skills: You’re now a sailor, competent at the helm and applying fundamental sailing skills with ease. Your senses become attuned to wind and motions, your boat and sail handling skills become intuitive, and there’s an earned swagger to your step.
Advancing skills to bareboat larger sailboats and safely navigate longer trips requires learning more advanced systems, larger boat dynamics, navigation and weather. You're no longer just the skipper, and now you become the navigator, engineer, weatherman, cook, electrician, plumber, etc....
The two primary advancement courses are Bareboat Chartering (ASA104, a weekend charter focused on systems and cruising) and Coastal Navigation (ASA105, teaches more advanced navigation skills). Moreover, we recommend courses such as Spinnaker, Marine Weather (ASA119), Locks Clinic and more (choose the 'Advance Skills' filter below).
