This course introduces important concepts and the related vocabulary of electronic small vessel navigation. It includes a discussion of computer voyage planning, the advantages and limitations of GPS sensors, operating principles of modern chartplotters and databases, VHF and DSC communication basics, the benefits and weaknesses of AIS (Automatic Identification System), ancillary electronic safety equipment, and everybody’s favorite slave - the autopilot.

This course will be of interest to those contemplating owning, chartering or crewing a sail or power vessel with sophisticated nav/com systems.
